We are off to Columbia later today for a weekend swim meet (ugh). We'll of course be eating and drinking at Shakespeare's. It's just the thing to do. We might also sneak away Saturday night after everyone's asleep and try to recapture past glory out on the town. Oh, who are we kidding? We'll be snoring by the 10 o'clock news. Anyway, most of the old places have changed.

This just in: Rob Neyer hates every move the Royals make, especially when they are acquiring productive major leaguers like Gil Meche and Coco Crisp instead of prospects like, say, Justin Huber or Denny Bautista.
We're fine with getting as many prospects as possible. But it's not a crime for the Royals to have some proven veterans. Glass can afford them. It's not like Wal-Mart is GM or something.

How did the swim meet go?
Long and tedious. Junior added time in almost every event he swam. He was cruising on a 200 Free, winning his heat by a mile...then he stopped after six laps instead of 8, thinking it was over. He still won the heat but he lost time. Anyway, ate Booches and Shakespeares. Have you been to the swim rec center at Mizzou? It's amazing.
When I went there I think all we had was the old Natatorium.
Dude's (my kid) first meet is on Dec. 7th. I think it is a relatively low-key affair. They are calling it a swim your own age meet.
He is only five so I don't expect him to win anything. The grandparents are coming down. How bored should they expect to be?
I'll be in K.C. over Thanksgiving. After some dry turkey on from my mom I hope to make it to Gate's and Winsteads.
Just invest in some of those fold-up chairs with the backs if you don't already have them. And take something to read. The idea of these swim meets, as I understand them, is to cut your own time. The times carry over from one meet to the next. You are constantly trying to make qualifying times for bigger meets. So it doesn't really matter where you place in the race, as long as you cut time. But I think that's boring. So I always root for Junior to win his heat, or I root for him to beat one of the other kids that I don't like. At these big meets, each event has something like 10-15 heats. It's crazy.
